Eating a nutritious diet is fundamental in good oral health. When planning meals, choose a variety of foods from the different food groups. Avoid fad diets that eliminate an entire food group because that can lead to a vitamin deficiency. Eating a variety of healthy foods not only promotes good oral health, but increasing fiber and vitamin intake may actually lower your risk of diseases. Also, keep your mouth hydrated throughout the day with water. This stimulates the production of saliva which protects both hard and soft tissues in the mouth.

A study performed at the State University of New York at Buffalo examined the link between gum disease, smoking and heart attack just a couple years ago. They took a look at those who had gum disease and smoked and those who had gum disease and did not smoke. The results turned out that the risk of heart attack was between 2 to 8 percent greater regardless of smoking habit, a known risk of gum disease. This illustrates the effect gum disease can have on the heart. The most important thing is to schedule regular dental visits, every six months, so that your dental care provider can check for signs of gum disease. If you do have gum disease, immediate treatment is necessary to help prevent other health issues often caused by gum disease. As always, consult with your doctor about any health concerns you may have.

Brushing and flossing properly can play a big part in improved oral health. When brushing, remember to use a soft bristled brush for approximately 2 minutes at least twice a day. Your brush should be held gently against your teeth at a 45 degree angle and should be swept over teeth in a circular motion. In addition to brushing each surface of your teeth, remember to gently brush your tongue as well. Although brushing can remove plaque from teeth, flossing is also very important. Daily flossing can remove plaque from between teeth where many cavities begin.

Many people would like to have a brighter smile. Most discoloration happens over time, commonly due to illness, heredity, or environmental factors. The good news is that there are several options available to achieve a whiter smile. The quickest way to a brighter smile is through in-office whitening procedures. This option is typically the first choice for patients who are interested in immediate results. Many dentists provide a take-home whitening option with custom-made application trays as well. This option can be a more convenient option for many patients interested in a brighter smile over a week or two. Unfortunately, some discoloration, like tetracycline stains for example, is not a good match for whitening products. In this case your dentist may recommend bonding or veneers to provide a brighter smile. Talk to your dentist today for a recommendation on the procedure that is best for you.

Speaking with your dentist before using a tooth whitening system is a great idea because not all whiteners are ideal for all discolorations. For example, teeth with a yellow hue typically whiten well. However, teeth with a brownish hue whiten less successfully, and teeth with a grayish hue don’t typically whiten well at all. Also, whitening may not give the desired result on teeth with bonding or fillings. In this case patients typically opt for cosmetic procedures to get the desired result. Your dentist can recommend a whitening plan that best suits your needs.

Protecting your heart health and oral health is very important, especially for those with an existing heart condition. Brushing and flossing regularly to remove plaque that you can't see below the gum line is most important. If you remove the plaque, you minimize the chance for getting gum disease. Remember to schedule regular checkups too. Also, always inform your dentist if you suffer from any heart condition. Explain to your dentist the nature of your problem and if it is under control. Be sure to list all medications you are taking. Also, be sure to speak with your physician about your dental care and treatment so that each of your health care providers fully understand the situation.

One main thing to steer clear from is any type of tobacco product. The Academy of General Dentistry reports that a one-pack-a-day smoking habit can cost you the loss of at least two teeth every 10 years. About 440,000 Americans die from various types of tobacco use each year, the majority being from oral cancer. Chewing tobacco is no better than cigarettes, as it can cause bad breath, discolor teeth, and promote tooth decay. Spit tobacco can be even more addictive because it contains higher levels of nicotine. If you currently use tobacco make a resolution to quit. Ask your dentist or health care provider for more information.

There are several options available that produce straighter teeth. For those with minimally crooked teeth, some contouring and reshaping is a more conservative approach to a straighter smile. These procedures can also correct a misaligned bite as well. Another option would be either traditional orthodontics or invisible braces, depending on the severity of misalignment. Crowns or veneers can not only straighten your teeth, but can also whiten their shade as well. Each of these options requires a different treatment length, follow-up, and maintenance. Talk to your dentist today for a recommendation on the straightening procedure that is best for you.

Take-home whitening products typically work over a period of a few weeks to get teeth their whitest. Gel is placed into a custom-fit tray and worn over a period of several hours each day to get the desired result. Another option, tooth whitening procedures done at your dentist’s office, results in an immediately brighter smile. This is ideal for special occasions, or anyone who wants instantly whiter teeth. Along with this procedure typically comes a set of custom-fit trays and touch-up whitening gel for future use. Consult your dentist to discover the whitening option best for you.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition that affects more than 3 million people in the United States. Talking with your dentist about your condition and treatment is very important because of the link between your oral health and overall health, especially your heart. Those with untreated or poorly treated CHF are at a higher risk for infection, cardiac arrest, heart attack or stroke during dental treatment. This is because the bacteria released during a standard dental visit can travel throughout the body, and may end up in the heart. The best approach is to share up-to-date information with your dentist before every appointment. Also be sure to share your dental conditions with your medical doctor so that everyone is on the same page. Heart patients deserve special care and open communication is the key.
