The Damaging Effects of the Sun on Lips
A Dental Focus on Cancer in the Sun Month |
Exposure to the sun, especially prolonged exposure, can cause lip cancer. In fact, 30 percent of those with lip cancer have outdoor jobs associated with prolonged exposure to the sun. The occurrence of lip cancer has declined in past decades, most likely due to the increased awareness of the damaging effects to prolonged exposure to the sun and the increased use of protective sunscreen. The best protection is to limit prolonged exposure to the sun, and always use protective sunscreen when exposed.
Also, the nicotine found in pipes and cigars have been known to cause lip cancer. It is best to avoid smoking altogether.
