Fluorosis in Children
A Dental Focus on the Role of Fluoride |
Because developing teeth are more sensitive to fluoride, too much fluoride can cause Fluorosis. Fluorosis is a harmless cosmetic discoloring or mottling of tooth enamel, frequently appearing as chalky white specks and lines or pitted and brown stained enamel on developing teeth. Children are at higher risk of developing fluorosis if they use too much toothpaste or fluoride suppliments, swallow certain toothpastes, or if they drink water containing excessive amounts of fluoride. Parents should monitor toothbrushing closely. Contact your dentist to know the proper amount of fluoride for your child.
