Gum Disease and Heart Attack Risk
A Dental Focus on American Heart Month |
 |
A study performed at the State University of New York at Buffalo examined the link between gum disease, smoking and heart attack just a couple years ago. They took a look at those who had gum disease and smoked and those who had gum disease and did not smoke. The results turned out that the risk of heart attack was between 2 to 8 percent greater regardless of smoking habit, a known risk of gum disease. This illustrates the effect gum disease can have on the heart. The most important thing is to schedule regular dental visits, every six months, so that your dental care provider can check for signs of gum disease. If you do have gum disease, immediate treatment is necessary to help prevent other health issues often caused by gum disease. As always, consult with your doctor about any health concerns you may have.
