The Effect of Gum Disease on the Heart
A Dental Focus on American Heart Month |
 |
Researchers have recently found possible links between gum disease and the heart. In fact, some research suggests that gum disease may be a more serious risk factor for heart disease than high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, high cholesterol, gender and age. Researchers believe that the bacteria that cause gum disease can become loose and can travel through the bloodstream. Some of these bacteria can travel to the arteries of your heart and cause plaque to build up inside your arteries. To protect the health of your heart, you should maintain good oral health. For starters, be sure to brush twice a day and floss regularly. Also, schedule routine dental visits so that your dentist can find any signs of gum disease as early as possible. If you have any questions about your dental health or oral health, be sure to ask your dentist.
