What Heart Patients’ Dentists Should Know

A Dental Focus on American Heart Month
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition that affects more than 3 million people in the United States. Talking with your dentist about your condition and treatment is very important because of the link between your oral health and overall health, especially your heart. Those with untreated or poorly treated CHF are at a higher risk for infection, cardiac arrest, heart attack or stroke during dental treatment. This is because the bacteria released during a standard dental visit can travel throughout the body, and may end up in the heart. The best approach is to share up-to-date information with your dentist before every appointment. Also be sure to share your dental conditions with your medical doctor so that everyone is on the same page. Heart patients deserve special care and open communication is the key.
